Collets
Category: Machine Shop
Summary: Holding tools or
workpieces with high precision.
Collets are precision workholding devices used on machine tools to securely hold cutting tools or workpieces. Unlike chucks, which typically use jaws to grip, collets use a sleeve with a tapered outer surface that is forced into a matching tapered receptacle. This creates a very precise and concentric grip, ensuring accurate tool or workpiece positioning. Collets are commonly used in milling machines, lathes, and routers, especially for high-speed or high-precision operations where runout (wobble) must be minimized. Different types of collets exist, each designed to hold specific tool or workpiece shapes and sizes.
