Counterbores
Category: Machine Shop
Summary: Enlarging holes
to a specific depth.
Counterbores are
cutting tools used to enlarge the opening of a hole to a specific diameter and
depth, creating a flat-bottomed recess. This recess is designed to accommodate
the head of a screw or bolt, allowing it to sit flush with or below the surface
of the workpiece. Unlike a standard drill bit that creates a hole all the way
through, a counterbore only enlarges the top portion of an existing hole. This
is essential in applications where a smooth, unobtrusive surface is required,
such as in machinery assembly or woodworking.
