Ausonia's long and distinguished
history is deeply rooted in Maniago, a small town nestled at the foot of the
PreAlps in Italy's FriuliVenezia Giulia region, an area renowned for its
ancient blacksmithing tradition. As far back as the 15th century, skilled
local knifemakers were suppliers to the troops of the Venetian Republic.
Central to this local industrial heritage was the Nanutti Beltrame family,
who, in the late 19th century, established the area's first equipped
metallurgical workshops, known as ‘battiferri’. This pioneering spirit
culminated in the family setting up their company in 1919—the very first of
its kind in Maniago—marking the beginning of a legacy that now spans 106
years. A pivotal moment in the company's journey occurred
in 1930 with the creation of the Ausonia brand. This brand has since
established its position over the decades and is today acknowledged worldwide
as a symbol of quality. The name "Ausonia" itself is rich in
classical history, being the name the ancient Greeks gave to the lands of the
Italic peninsula, deriving from Ausonio, son of Ulysses and the sorceress
Circe, the legendary king of the Ausoni people. Accompanying the brand name
is a strong and recognizable symbol: a rampant lion, inspired by the Lion of
Saint Mark frescoed on the façade of Palazzo D'Attimis in Maniago. This
fresco was painted in 1570 by Pomponio Amalteo, a pupil and soninlaw of the
renowned artist Giovanni Antonio de’ Sacchis, also known as ‘il Pordenone’. Ausonia demonstrated remarkable foresight early in
its development. By the 1940s, ahead of many contemporaries, the company
began to invest strategically in communication, associating its brand with
evocative illustrations and even sponsoring the local football team. The
1970s marked a period of significant expansion: the Ausonia product range
grew to include a new line of tools and equipment for the building industry,
complementing its existing agricultural line and its offerings of cutlery,
kitchen utensils, and houseware. During this decade, the company also began
to focus more intently on foreign markets and increased its advertising
activities in trade publications. The 1980s saw the formal commencement of Ausonia's
internationalization process, with the forging of new business relations with
international partners and the strategic outsourcing of some product
manufacturing. Participation in trade fairs was also intensified, including
prominent events like SAIE in Bologna, sometimes in partnership with other
brands such as the Spanish Bellota. More recently, the company celebrated its
centenary in 2019. True to its forwardlooking ethos, Ausonia transformed this
incredible milestone into a new starting point, embarking on a path of
modernization aimed at navigating an even broader market scenario filled with
new opportunities. Today, Ausonia continues to thrive by merging the
invaluable heritage of craftsmanship, preserved for countless generations,
with cuttingedge manufacturing technologies. This synergy enables the company
to produce an exceptionally wide range of tools and equipment designed for
both professionals and enthusiasts across various sectors, including
agriculture, gardening, building, cooking, and outdoor activities. |
