A portal crane, often referred to as a gantry crane, is a type of overhead crane characterized by its supporting structure, which resembles a large portal or archway. This structure typically consists of two or more upright legs connected at the top by a horizontal bridge girder, upon which the hoist trolley runs for horizontal movement of the load. The entire portal structure is usually mounted on wheels or travels along rails installed at ground level or on a dockside, allowing the crane to span and service a large rectangular work area beneath the bridge. Portal cranes are designed to lift and move extremely heavy loads and are commonly found in outdoor environments such as shipyards for loading and unloading cargo or assembling ship components, container terminals for stacking and moving shipping containers, railway yards, steel mills, and large manufacturing or storage yards where heavy materials need to be transported over a significant area without the need for overhead runway beams supported by building structures.
