A potato stalk cutter, often referred to as a haulm topper or vine shredder, is an agricultural implement specifically used in potato cultivation. Its primary purpose is to cut and often shred the green leafy tops (stalks, haulms, or vines) of potato plants before the tubers are harvested. This operation is typically performed a couple of weeks prior to digging up the potatoes. Farmers use stalk cutters for several important reasons: it makes the subsequent harvesting process much easier and more efficient by removing the bulky foliage that can clog harvesting machinery; it helps to initiate the skin set process, where the potato skin toughens, reducing susceptibility to bruising and disease during harvest and storage; and it can aid in controlling the spread of certain diseases, like late blight, from the foliage to the tubers. The machine usually consists of rotating flails or blades mounted on a frame, pulled by or mounted on a tractor, which cuts the stalks close to the ground level along the potato ridges.
