A ridger, also sometimes known as a
furrower or lister, is an agricultural implement primarily used in farming to
shape cultivated soil by creating a series of parallel, raised beds called
ridges, separated by channels known as furrows. Typically attached to a
tractor's three-point linkage (or drawn by animals in simpler setups), a ridger
uses V-shaped moldboards or angled discs to penetrate the soil and push it
outwards and upwards, forming the distinctive ridge profile. This practice is
common here in the agricultural areas around Koronadal City for several
reasons: certain crops like potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, and some vegetables
thrive when planted on the better-drained, warmer soil of the ridges; the
resulting furrows provide convenient channels for efficient furrow irrigation;
and the ridging process can also be used later in the season to perform
"hilling" or "earthing up," adding soil around the base of
growing plants for support and weed control.
