Brief Description: The story of Claydon is deeply rooted in a
multi-generational family farming heritage. The Claydon family has farmed the
heavy clay lands of Suffolk, in the east of England, since the early 1900s,
with brothers Jeff and Frank Claydon representing the third generation to
farm under the E.T. Claydon & Sons partnership since 1970. This
practical, hands-on farming background has been the driving force behind the
company's innovations.The formal enterprise, Claydon Yield-o-Meter Limited,
was established in 1981, a year after Jeff Claydon invented the company's
first product, the Claydon Yield-o-Meter. His vision was to create a grain
monitoring device that could be fitted to almost any combine, providing
farmers with accurate, real-time data on harvested tonnage, a significant
advancement over the traditional weighbridge method. As the first-ever grain
monitoring device of its kind, the Yield-o-Meter enabled farmers to analyze
data they previously had to guess, helping them more easily determine
high-yielding crops and varieties. The device's success was recognized in
1995 when it won a prestigious Royal Agricultural Society of England Silver
Medal. In the same year, the company also brought the Furrow Cracker, a
device that slices through freshly turned clods to aid natural decomposition,
to the UK market. A pivotal moment for the company and for European
agriculture came in 2003 when Jeff Claydon launched the first Claydon direct
drill—the V-Drill. This innovation was born out of necessity; low wheat
prices and the ever-increasing costs of inputs and traditional ploughing on
the family farm were making operations unviable. The V-Drill dramatically
reduced the cost and time required to establish crops. This groundbreaking
development established Claydon as the European market leader in direct
strip-till drilling, a position it has held since. The original V-Drill was
followed by subsequent innovations like the SR, Hybrid, and advanced
Evolution drills, and the product line has been expanded over the years with
stubble management machinery and rolls to offer a complete crop establishment
solution. All Claydon machinery is developed on a working
farm, by farmers, for farmers. Every product is rigorously tried and tested
in real farming conditions before being brought to market. This practical
approach is evident on the Claydon Farm itself, which has not been ploughed
since 2002 and where the family establishes around 400 hectares each autumn
drilling season with a single 6m Claydon Drill and tractor, with further
hectares drilled on contract. Today, Claydon's drills, straw harrows, and
inter-row hoes are operating in over 30 countries across the world, supported
by a dedicated network of distributors and dealers, and manufactured from the
Claydon family base in Suffolk. |
