Brief Description: With a history spanning 54 years, the story of
Motogomme Donati began in 1971 when a very young Francesco Donati, leveraging
experience gained from working in tire reconstruction and at well-known tire
dealerships in Rome, decided to open his own business. Together with his wife
Natascia, he established the workshop in the characteristic Rione Borgo, a
collection of alleys surrounding the Basilica of St. Peter, at the corner of
Via del Falco at number 81 Borgo Vittorio—a location that, over five decades
later, remains a historic shop in the capital. Initially, the business, then known as DONATI GOMME,
serviced car tires. However, with the increasing use of two-wheelers over the
years, motorcycles became a more constant presence in the workshop. This
trend led to a pivotal moment in 1982 when Francesco had a groundbreaking
intuition: to become a shop dedicated exclusively to motorcycle tires.
Recognizing that there were no such specialists in Rome at the time, he acted
on the idea. No sooner said than done, the last car tires were sold, and
**MOTOGOMME DONATI** was officially born, establishing itself as the city's
first specialist of its kind. Fate often favors the bold, and soon after, through
the intervention of the Dunlop racing sector manager at the time, Alessandro
Pavesi, Francesco began to frequent racetracks all over Europe. He became a
member of the English Dunlop Racing Team as an assembly assistant for
legendary riders of the era, including icons like Mamola, Roberts, Uncini,
Gardner, and Rainey. He also worked with homegrown Italian racers such as
Massimiani, Papa, Sakamoto, Nardone, and Brutti, and later with Pirelli,
where he "rubberized" a very promising Max Biaggi who became the
Italian Sport Production champion. From the 1990s to the present day, the sales point
has become more than just a workshop; it is a beloved meeting place for
motorcyclists and scooter riders from all walks of life. While tires are
being fitted, customers exchange opinions and share stories related to their
passion for two wheels. It is not uncommon to meet people from the world of
entertainment and sports who, jealous of their vehicles, entrust them only to
the expert care of Francesco and his son Emiliano. Emiliano joined the group
in 1996 and today is responsible for carrying forward the family's legacy and
passion for serving Rome's motorcycling community. |
