Brief Description: With a rich history spanning 65 years, Officine
Meccaniche Ferruzza was established in 1960, initially manufacturing
agricultural trailers and other machinery such as single rotary cultivators,
articulated loaders, and dozers. From its foundation, the company has always
taken great care in the manufacture of its products, expertly bringing
together strength, innovative design, and reliability. By the early 1960s, the company had already made a
name for itself in the local market. A pivotal strategic shift occurred in
1968 when it began to focus exclusively on the production of agricultural
trailers, looking to expand and diversify the range of trailers offered. That
same year, Ferruzza was awarded an important contract by Ferrovie dello Stato
(Italian state railways) to supply luggage trailers, a testament to its
growing reputation. The development process continued throughout the 1970s as
the company expanded its business to a larger market in the western area of
Sicily. From 1978 onwards, Ferruzza grew remarkably, increasing its
production and adding a new range of trailers for the transport of
self-propelled machinery to its portfolio, which allowed it to extend its
influence to the whole regional market. The period from 1980 to 1982 was dedicated to
intensive research and development, resulting in a significant breakthrough:
a new hydraulic, continuous/semi-continuous, and automatic braking system was
invented and patented by the company. The prototype, tested on an operating
unit consisting of a Fiat 80/90 DT tractor and a Ferruzza 20-ton triple-axle
trailer, delivered excellent results in terms of adjustability and response
time. This innovation laid the foundations for the development of the CUNA
(Italian automotive standardization body) 341-01 table of 1986, which defined
the technical features required for the registration of agricultural machines
equipped with such braking systems. In 1985, the system was further tested by
the Institute of Agricultural Mechanics of the University of Bologna and by
the National Research and Testing Centre of the Ministry of Transport.
Another important innovation introduced by Ferruzza was a load transfer
system that enables double or triple-axle trailers to transfer part of their
load weight onto the tractor hitch, increasing the tractor’s adhesive weight
and allowing a relatively lightweight tractor to pull a very heavy trailer.
Both the innovative braking system and the load transfer system won the award
for best technical innovation at the EIMA International Exhibition for
Agricultural Machinery in 1990. The development process has gone on incessantly.
During the 1990s, the company further expanded its product portfolio, and its
reputation extended beyond regional borders. Today, Ferruzza operates from
its facility covering 10,000 sqm (with a building area of 3,000 sqm),
occupies an important position in the national market, and exports its
high-quality products to various European and African countries. |
