With a history spanning 39 years,
Garford Farm Machinery was established in 1986 by Norman Garford, his three
sons (Michael, Robert & Philip), and Ted Chamberlain. The company's
origins are rooted in practical farming; prior to its establishment, Norman
and his sons were farmers who were always keen to improve and adapt machinery
to suit their specific needs. In the 1980s, following initial work by the National
Institute of Agricultural Engineering (NIAE), the Garfords designed and
developed the innovative Skew Bar Topper to retrofit onto various models
of sugar beet harvesters. This device was engineered to remove leaves from
the top of the sugar beet without damaging the beet itself, enabling farmers
to collect a higher tonnage from their crop. After a successful demonstration
at the 1985 British sugar beet event, Garford Farm Machinery was formally created,
and the Skew Bar Topper Kits were successfully brought to market in 1986. Thoughts then moved to developing a complete sugar
beet harvester. The new machine was designed to incorporate not only the
successful Skew Bar Topper but also the unique **Spiroll Cleaning System for removing clods, stones, and other debris from the sugar beet. The first
prototype was produced in time for the 1988 season, initially as a 3 or 4-row
machine, with a 6-row version added a few years later. Sales of the harvester
continued to grow throughout the 1990s, with many sold in the UK and a gradual
increase in exports to countries such as Chile and Japan. Over the years,
ownership of the company has changed, with Norman Garford and Ted Chamberlain
retiring from the partnership in 2009. |
