Brief Description: With a legacy rooted in a small bicycle shop in
Niccone, Umbria, known throughout the valley since the early 1900s, the
Giunti company began its journey into agriculture in September 1945. At that
time, it started renting irrigation hoses and motor pumps to farmers, a
business model that was ahead of its time, emphasizing function over
ownership. This initial activity, as recalled by current president Pietro
Giunti, grandson of the founder, was marked by resourcefulness, with local
rumors suggesting they even cut cannon shells to weld into tubes. During the 1950s, as continuous irrigation became
more common in Italy, the company evolved, establishing its first production
line for steel pipes with quick-release couplings, which soon expanded to
three lines. A major strategic shift occurred in the late 1970s when
irrigation became more sophisticated and individualized for specific crops.
It was at this point that the crucial concept of irrigation management was
introduced alongside production. To serve a growing national market, Giunti
branched out into three separate companies: COGEIR S.p.A. in Caltagirone, IMG in Pescara, and CO.MIR in Perugia, with the latter beginning to
manufacture self-propelled irrigation machines as soon as they appeared on
the market. During these years, while Giacomo Giunti led the group, his son
Pietro founded his own parallel companies focused on commercial plant
engineering. This era marked a significant shift toward research
and development, moving from single-product manufacturing to a focus on
designing complete, automatic irrigation systems. This was driven by the
growing global need for water and energy savings, a trend studied in Israel
and California in the early 1980s that is now a worldwide necessity. As a
result, drip irrigation systems began to replace the traditional sprinkler
systems. Today, this trend continues, with the clear affirmation of drip
irrigation over fixed and self-propelled systems, which are in sharp decline. The Giunti group, a European leader in its specific
sector, now includes multiple production plants, such as a motor pump unit in
Bastia Umbra and a new facility in Sant'Angelo in Vado for plastic materials
and Hydroflex hoses. Between 2000 and 2001, the group also acquired the
struggling but reputable Valducci S.p.A. group, relaunching four of its six
companies to quickly achieve results alongside new product development. The
group's structure is completed by two technical-commercial units in Italy and
France, the latter focused on machinery with unique characteristics for the
foreign market. Today, the value of a niche company like Giunti is
measured not just by revenue but by operating profits and innovation. The
company has four technicians based in California focused on research and
patenting and offers an impressive range of over 7,500 products, with a
particular focus on pumping and control units and accessories for all types
of piping and micro-irrigation. Given the fragmented nature of Italian
agriculture, the market is primarily export-oriented, solidifying Giunti's
position as a global player. |
