Brief Description: The success story of the company that would become
Walterscheid began in Siegburg, Germany, in September 1919. With a legacy now
spanning 106 years, the enterprise was born out of the challenging post-World
War I era. The founder, Johann "Jean" Josef
Walterscheid (born 1892), was a skilled lathe operator who had completed his
apprenticeship and worked at the "Königlichen Werke," Siegburg's
royal armaments factory. Following Germany's capitulation in November 1918
and the subsequent Allied occupation of the Rhineland, the local armaments
industry was banned, and its factories were closed in September 1919. Facing
unemployment, the 27-year-old Jean Walterscheid made the brave decision to
become self-employed. A passionate cyclist, he chose to manufacture
sprockets for bicycles. He acquired a lathe from his former workplace and
rented a former washhouse on Mühlengasse (now Mühlenstraße), where he set up
his shop. Supported by his friend and new partner, Adolf Mletzko, the
"Mletzko & Walterscheid" metal goods factory commenced
operation with one additional worker, forming a trio that laid the foundation
for a global enterprise. |
