The story of DeLaval is a Swedish
saga of ingenuity that spans over 140 years, a narrative defined by a simple
but powerful truth: "You don’t get this old by remaining the same."
It began in 1883 with Gustaf de Laval, a visionary descendant of French
émigrés born in Dalarna, who founded AB Separator not just to build machines,
but to change the very nature of agriculture. At the very heart of their identity is the spirit of
the inventor. The spark ignited in 1878 when Gustaf patented the centrifugal
cream separator, an invention that revolutionized dairy processing. But he
didn't stop there. A man who saw "no limitation to what could be
achieved," Gustaf acquired 92 Swedish patents and founded 37 companies
during his lifetime. His legacy was one of restless creation, influencing
contemporaries and creating work for millions of people that continues to
this day. This is a story of corporate evolution and focus. In
1963, the company changed its name to Alfa Laval, becoming a global
industrial titan. However, a pivotal moment arrived in 2000, when the owners,
Tetra Pak, sold Alfa Laval but chose to keep the agricultural soul of the
business. This retained portion became the DeLaval we know today—a company
dedicated exclusively to the dairy farmer. Today, the story of DeLaval is one of a legacy kept
alive through action. They continue to work on the farmers’ behalf, striving
to improve milk quality, food production, and animal welfare. It is a promise
to drive progress in milk production, ensuring that the environment for both
animals and humans is better tomorrow than it is today, just as Gustaf de
Laval would have wanted. |
