The story of Demco is a classic American tale of resilience and reinvention, a narrative that traces its roots back to Robert Dethmers, a man who began as a blacksmith. The journey took shape in 1958, when Dethmers sold his Allis Chalmers dealership to focus entirely on his true passion: building agricultural equipment. By 1964, this passion was formalized into the Dethmers Manufacturing Company (Demco), a name that would soon become synonymous with Midwestern ingenuity.

    At the very heart of their identity is a pivotal moment of survival and foresight. Following Robert's passing in 1974, ownership passed to Jim Koerselman and Ken Mulder. When the Farm Crisis of the 1980s threatened the agricultural sector, the company faced a critical crossroads. Instead of folding, they diversified. This is the story of the Kar Kaddy—a tow dolly invention that not only saved the company but launched them into an entirely new market. This strategic pivot transformed Demco from a purely agricultural manufacturer into a dual-industry leader in towing and RV products.

    This is a story of strategic expansion and family values. Over the years, Demco grew not just by survival, but by acquisition, bringing companies like Maurer Manufacturing into the fold and expanding their portfolio to include 5th-wheel hitches and advanced braking systems. Today, the company remains proudly family-owned, led by Bob Koerselman, Kevin Ten Haken, and James Koerselman. They continue to uphold the founder's values, placing a premium on innovation, relationships, and community.

    Today, the story of Demco is preserved and celebrated in Boyden, Iowa. The company recently renovated its original location to include the Heritage Center, a tribute to their 60-year history, and the DEPOT, a state-of-the-art training facility. It is a promise that while they honor the blacksmith's forge where they began, they are fully committed to training the next generation for the future.
