The story of Encoder Products Company (EPC) is an American narrative of ingenuity born from necessity, a journey that began in the late 1960s with an electrical engineer named Bill Watt. Working in Southern California, Bill noticed a critical disconnect: the industry was moving toward modern programmable logic controllers (PLCs), but the encoders on the market couldn't talk to them. So, Bill did what any great engineer would do—he went into his garage and invented one that could.

At the very heart of their identity is the legendary "Cube Encoder." Established in 1969, EPC launched with the Model 711, a device that revolutionized the motion control world. Bill chose the cube shape not for aesthetics, but for pure utility; it allowed mounting holes on three different flat surfaces, giving users the versatility to tailor the installation to the application. This innovation became an industry standard and the foundation of the Accu-Coder® brand.

This is a story of returning to one's roots. While the business started in an Orange County garage, Bill knew that true growth required a different kind of soil. in 1972, he moved the company home to Sandpoint, Idaho, drawn by the "great work ethic" of the local farm families and a better quality of life. What began as a rental next to a historic theater evolved into a massive 100,000-square-foot global headquarters in Sagle, Idaho, nestled near Cocolalla Lake.

This is a story of relentless innovation and global reach. Because EPC concentrates solely on encoders, they have been responsible for a long list of industry "firsts"—from the first flexible-mounting systems to the first encoders capable of operating at 120° C. Their narrative has expanded far beyond Idaho, with subsidiaries in the UK and China and partnerships in India. By 2002, they had reached the monumental milestone of selling their one millionth encoder, a testament to their dominance in the field.

Today, the story of EPC is one of a legacy secured. Though Bill Watt passed away in 2020, his vision remains the driving force of the company. It is a promise that EPC stands behind every product with a 3-year standard warranty, delivering the reliable, high-quality motion feedback solutions that keep the world turning.
