The story of GUSS is a narrative of agronomic
ingenuity and a father-son legacy, a journey that began in the soil of the
San Joaquin Valley in 1982. It started with Dave Crinklaw and his father,
Bob, founding Crinklaw Farm Services (CFS). Armed with only two tractors and
a willingness to work, they began by spraying an average of 40 acres a day.
When Bob retired a few years later, Dave took the reins with a vision to
transform this humble operation into an industry leader. By assembling a key
team—including Orlando Mora, Richard Vaccari, and Ryan Johnson—CFS grew from
those early days of 40 acres to spraying up to 5,000 acres a day during peak
season. At the very heart of their identity is a restless
drive to solve "pain points." Dave Crinklaw did not just want to
service farms; he wanted to fix the inefficiencies inherent in agriculture.
Under his guidance, the company became an incubator for invention, developing
the industry’s first 3 and 4-row vineyard sprayers, mechanical vineyard
pruners, and the Tree-See orchard sprayer. This is a story of patience and timing. The concept
of GUSS (Global Unmanned Spray System) was not an overnight success; it was a
long-term vision. The team first examined the feasibility of an unmanned
sprayer in late 2007, but the world wasn't ready. They waited until 2014,
when vehicle guidance technologies finally caught up to their ambition, to
begin building and testing prototypes. This is a story of a solution born from experience.
GUSS was not designed by Silicon Valley outsiders; it was developed in-house
by farmers who lived the challenges of orchard spraying every day. After
years of refinement, the first units were delivered in late 2019, and GUSS
Automation, LLC was launched as an individual entity. Today, the story of GUSS is one of global
responsibility. It is a promise to address the critical challenge of our
time: feeding an exponentially growing population with finite resources. By
allowing farmers to work more quickly, efficiently, and consistently, GUSS
ensures that agriculture can grow more food using less, securing the future
of farming one autonomous pass at a time. |
