True innovation rarely starts in a
corporate boardroom; it usually begins with a pair of calloused hands and a
problem that needs solving. For JOMAC Ltd., the story started in 1988 inside
a small garage south of Carrollton, Ohio. Founded by Rich Jones under the
name Jones Manufacturing, the company initially focused on crafting
heavy-duty hand carts. But as Jones rapidly honed his fabrication skills and
engineered new manufacturing methods, the operation quickly outgrew its
humble footprint. One garage expanded into two, and soon, even that wasn't
enough to contain the explosive growth. To keep pace with demand, the
operation relocated to a larger facility in Carrollton, officially
streamlining its name to JOMAC Ltd. and setting the stage for a major shift
in the industrial vehicle market. The true catalyst for JOMAC's breakthrough didn't
come from a blueprint; it came from the driver's seat of a 1969 Ford truck.
While running his other business, Jones Propane, Rich spent the 1980s doing
grueling, hands-on field work delivering heavy cylinders. This
boots-on-the-ground experience gave him a deep, practical understanding of
what the service industry desperately needed: efficiency and payload
capacity. Initially, JOMAC manufactured traditional steel service truck
bodies. However, Jones quickly identified a critical, industry-wide
flaw—steel was simply too heavy, constantly causing trucks to become
overloaded and sluggish. Refusing to accept the status quo, JOMAC became a
pioneer by pivoting entirely to aluminum. Their mission was clear and ambitious:
engineer the lightest, most durable, heavy-duty service body on the market.
And they succeeded. But a world-class, lightweight service body needs a
world-class lifting mechanism to match. In the early 1990s, Jones went
searching for a high-quality crane that could complement the uncompromising
standards of his aluminum truck beds. He found that equal partner in an
Iowa-based manufacturer called Ekegard Cranes. The synergy was undeniable,
and by the late 1990s, JOMAC took the next massive leap forward. Working
directly with Fritz Ekstam of Ekegard, JOMAC brought the manufacturing
process in-house, building these rugged hydraulic truck-mounted cranes
directly at their Carrollton facility. Today, what started as a hand cart operation in a
single garage has expanded into a global industrial force. JOMAC Ltd. now
custom-builds elite aluminum truck bodies and hydraulic cranes for some of
the most demanding and rigorous sectors on the planet, supplying military
operations, the oil and gas industry, heavy-duty tire service fleets, and
countless other industries worldwide. |
