A Century of Earthmoving: The Kelly Tractor Co. Story

Long before modern highways carved through Florida or massive agricultural operations dominated the southern landscape, the foundation for progress was being laid by a single man with a profound understanding of heavy machinery. In 1925, E.E. "Pop" Kelly traveled from Missouri to Daytona Beach to represent the Holt Manufacturing Co. It was a pivotal year in industrial history—Holt would soon merge to form the legendary Caterpillar Tractor Co., and Pop Kelly was right there on the ground floor.

By 1933, in the midst of a challenging economic era, Pop Kelly made a decisive move. He purchased the Clewiston Motor Co., officially becoming the Caterpillar dealer for South Florida. What started as a focused operation quickly became the mechanical backbone of the region. As Florida's infrastructure and agricultural sectors exploded, so did the company. They expanded their reach to serve the vital citrus and sugarcane growers, the booming highway and bridge builders, and the rapidly growing seaports and housing developments. In 1963, the enterprise officially took on the name that would become synonymous with industrial power in the state: Kelly Tractor Co.

The story of Kelly Tractor is fundamentally a story of generational dedication and aggressive, strategic expansion. When Loyd Kelly succeeded his uncle in 1953, he catalyzed a massive wave of growth, opening branches across West Palm Beach, Ft. Pierce, and Ft. Myers. By 1971, the company had entirely outgrown its early facilities, moving into a sprawling 40-acre site in Miami. When the third generation—brothers L. Patrick and Nicholas D. Kelly—took the helm in 1987, they didn't just expand the physical footprint; they vastly diversified the arsenal.

Kelly Tractor evolved from a dedicated Caterpillar dealer into a comprehensive industrial powerhouse. They acquired franchises for Link-Belt Cranes, IMT Drill Rigs, Massey Ferguson AG Tractors, and an extensive lineup of material handling titans like Mitsubishi, Kalmar, and Jungheinrich. They embraced the future of earthmoving by integrating AccuGrade GPS technology, ensuring their fleet wasn't just powerful, but surgically precise. Today, the operation is a titan. Supported by over 500 employees—including an elite 150-person parts and service team—Kelly Tractor operates out of a massive 240,000-square-foot headquarters with branches blanketing South and Central Florida.

Now, with the fourth generation leading the charge—President Chris Kelly and Executive Vice President Katherine Kelly—the company has crossed its 90th anniversary and continues to break new ground with the 2025 opening of a massive, full-service facility in Fort Pierce. Through nearly a century of relentless evolution, one thing has remained constant: whether it is a massive drill rig, a precision paver, or an agricultural tractor, Kelly Tractor Co. provides the power that builds the future.
