The Timeline of the Brands

1966: Pileco is founded in Houston, Texas, by Otto Kammerer, eventually growing into one of the most recognized hammer brands in the pile-driving industry.

2005: Kammerer sells the Pileco business to BAUER (later known as BAUER Equipment America).

2015: Global Piling and Equipment Co. (GPE) is formed to bring innovative machinery to the global piling market.

November 2018: In a major strategic move, the rapidly growing GPE purchases the Pileco name, assets, and intellectual property from BAUER. This unites GPE with a 50-year-old legacy brand, solving the challenge of building brand awareness from scratch.

George Smith’s "Full-Circle" Journey

George Smith’s career is the defining thread of this corporate history.

   The Early Days (1970): Smith started as a mechanic at Pileco, doing everything from pressure washing to painting, noting he may have been their second employee.

   The First Era of Leadership (2004–2009): After leaving in 1976 and gaining experience, he returned to Pileco and eventually became President. Under his leadership, the company exploded, growing from a few dozen employees to over 100, and skyrocketing sales from $15 million to over $100 million.

   The Founder (2015): After a stint at International Construction Equipment, Smith founded GPE.

   The Reunion (2018): By acquiring Pileco, Smith brought his career full circle. Today, he continues to lead the 20-person team with no plans to retire, driven by a lifelong passion for the science of pile driving.

The Arsenal and Operations

   The Heavy Iron: GPE/Pileco specializes in diesel pile hammers, ranging from the smaller D-6 models all the way up to the massive D-800 unit. They also supply vibratory drivers/extractors and drills (built by Hydraulic Power Systems, Inc.), alongside lead systems, power units, and helmets.

   Manufacturing and Reach: The diesel hammers for both brands are manufactured in China. Operations are headquartered in Conroe, Texas, supported by a robust network of dealers across the U.S. (including VA, MO, PA, FL, CA) and a dealer in Toronto, Canada.

   Frontline Deployment: Their heavy equipment is trusted on major infrastructure jobs, such as driving the new 2.4-mile Rodanthe Bridge project in North Carolina's Outer Banks.
