Commanding the Current: The Portadam Story

When a commercial dive team needs to repair a ruptured high-pressure pipeline at the bottom of a murky river, or a heavy marine construction project requires a completely dry work zone in the middle of an active bay, the water itself is a relentless, unyielding enemy. For centuries, builders fought this losing battle with sandbags—a method that is now a catastrophic liability in modern commercial construction. Forcing millions of gallons of water to absolutely submit requires highly engineered, severe-duty containment. Mastering the flow of the world’s most powerful resource is the undisputed domain of Portadam.

They do not just stack barriers. Since their inception, they have engineered the highly advanced, portable cofferdam systems that completely rewrite the physics of marine construction, allowing heavy contractors and government agencies to build safely where it was previously deemed impossible.

Forged in the Deep

The Portadam legacy was not born in a sterile lab; it was forged directly against the brutal currents of the real world. In 1974, two engineers in the United Kingdom achieved what builders had sought since the Roman Empire: an effective, temporary, and eco-friendly technology to divert water for in-water construction. Crucially, they engineered a novel, non-subsurface penetrating design, completely eliminating the need to violently drive steel sheets into the riverbed.

This British innovation caught the eye of Bill Streit, a highly experienced commercial diver operating out of South Jersey. Faced with the complex, high-stakes mission of repairing a leaky pipeline 10 feet deep in a muddy Virginia river, Streit needed a way to create a completely dry environment. He called the UK engineers, imported the equipment, and took it on its maiden voyage.

The result was absolute structural supremacy. The site remained dry as a bone, the leak was rapidly secured, and the environment was completely protected. Streit recognized he had a devastating operational advantage. What began as a simple rental agreement rapidly escalated into a full partnership. In 1985, Portadam Inc. was officially born.

The Arsenal of Water Command

Under Streit's leadership, and eventually transitioning beyond his family in the early 2000s, Portadam aggressively scaled its firepower. They expanded their operations across the US, Canada, and internationally, becoming the absolute trusted authority for heavy hitters like the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), FEMA, and the National Park Service.

Today, Portadam operates as a three-dimensional powerhouse, engineered to dictate exactly where water goes:

Water Diversion (Keeping Water Out): The legendary original cofferdam system. Engineered to safely push back lakes, rivers, and bays, allowing crews to execute critical, heavy-duty construction on dry, stable ground.

Water Storage (Keeping Water In): Realizing that the physics of keeping water out could be aggressively reversed, Portadam revolutionized the industrial space by engineering large-scale, temporary water storage systems for unique, massive-volume projects worldwide.

Flood Protection (Keeping Water Away): Driven directly by requests from USACE in 2004, Portadam weaponized its technology against rising tides. By 2018, as the market demand reached critical mass, they launched FloodDefender™—a proprietary, rapidly deployable perimeter barrier system engineered to protect critical infrastructure and human life from catastrophic flooding.

The Poseidon Syndicate

Portadam does not fight the current alone. In 2024, their absolute dominance in water management made them a critical acquisition target. Poseidon Barge, a massive, leading provider of sectional barges and heavy marine construction assets, acquired Portadam, Inc.

This strategic alignment seamlessly fuses Portadam's elite water-control expertise with Poseidon’s massive marine hardware footprint. Today, utilizing the exact same highly effective engineering DNA developed in 1974, Portadam ensures that whether the water needs to be diverted, contained, or violently held back from a city, the barrier holds, the site stays dry, and the mission is accomplished.
