An excavator is a versatile and powerful piece of heavy construction equipment primarily used for digging, but also capable of a wide array of other tasks. It consists of a cab (where the operator sits) mounted on a rotating platform (the "house"), which is connected to an undercarriage that can be either tracked (for better off-road mobility) or wheeled (for better on-road mobility). The excavator's main working tool is a bucket attached to a boom and arm (or stick), all powered by a hydraulic system. This hydraulic system allows the operator to control the bucket's movement with precision and force, enabling it to scoop up earth, rock, or other materials.

Excavators are found on various construction sites, from small landscaping projects to large-scale infrastructure developments. Their versatility is greatly enhanced by the availability of numerous attachments, such as hydraulic breakers (hammers) for demolition, shears for cutting metal, augers for drilling holes, and grapples for handling materials. This adaptability makes excavators indispensable machines in the construction, mining, forestry, and demolition industries.
