Brief Description: The Carpi brand, with a legacy in agricultural
spraying equipment dating back to 1904, is now a registered trademark of
Agrosuperior SA and has been marketed through its Superior Fertilizers
division since 1962, reflecting a 63-year distribution partnership. The
original company, "F.lli Giacomo & Luigi Carpi," was founded
121 years ago in Poviglio (Reggio Emilia), Italy, by brothers Giacomo and
Luigi Carpi, who pioneered the design, manufacturing, and distribution of
agricultural spraying equipment. After forty-four years under this name, the
company structure evolved in 1948 when the Italian Federation of Agricultural
Consortia (FEDERCONSORZI) acquired a majority stake, leading to its renaming
as Carpi Officine Meccaniche S.p.A. By this time, the second generation of
the family, Mr. Albino Carpi and Dr. Giacomo Carpi, were already managing the
organization as partners. The enduring international relationship began in the
early 1960s when Raúl Gurdián Montealegre, one of the founding partners of
Costa Rica's Abonos Superior, visited Carpi during a trip to Italy. This
initial contact fostered a solid business relationship, with Abonos Superior
subsequently introducing and distributing Carpi equipment in Costa Rica and
throughout Central America. In 1988, the Italian company transformed into
Carpi Officine Meccaniche S.r.l. (a limited liability company), with its
shareholding then divided between FEDECONSORZI (59.24%), Eng. Albino Carpi
(32.53%), and Dr. Giacomo Carpi (8.23%). At that time, approximately 60% of
Carpi's sales were generated in Italy through FEDECONSORZI's distribution
network (Consorzi Agrari Provinciali), while the remainder was international,
with a significant 21% in Central America invoiced by Abonos Superior, and
other sales in Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. A critical turning point occurred in the early 1990s
when FEDECONSORZI, Carpi's majority shareholder, faced severe financial and
administrative problems, culminating in what became the biggest financial
scandal in post-war Italy and leading to its bankruptcy. This situation had a
direct and detrimental impact on Officine Carpi, which consequently declared
bankruptcy on July 30, 1993. During the ensuing bankruptcy proceedings, the
appointed liquidator auctioned the company's iconic building in Poviglio. Faced
with the inability to manage numerous advances previously made by Abonos
Superior (then part of the Corporación Superior group) for the purchase of
Carpi products, the liquidator granted, by judicial authorization, a private
sales contract to Abonos Superior S.A. This contract included Carpi's
remaining movable assets, such as finished and manufacturing equipment,
technical data, dies, spare parts and their coding, designs, and partially
the trademarks. Due to Italian laws at the time restricting 100% foreign
ownership, Abonos Superior S.A. acquired 99% of the shares of the newly
formed operating entity, with the remaining 1% held by Eng. Albino Carpi. The new Italian company, Officine Carpi S.r.l., was
officially established on August 5, 1993. On November 28, 1993, Eng. A. Carpi
and his nephew Adriano 'Lelio' Sistici, together with Abonos Superior S.A.,
combined their talent and intellectual property for the continued
manufacture, distribution, and sale of equipment and spare parts under the
CARPI brand. Concurrently, in that same pivotal year, Abonos Superior began
producing Carpi pumps, including the enduring Spray-Mec model (which is still
manufactured and marketed in Costa Rica today), at its plant in La Lima,
Cartago, Costa Rica, initially utilizing raw materials and finished parts
sourced from Italy. Officine Carpi S.r.l. continued its operations in
Poviglio (Reggio Emilia), Italy, for three decades until 2023. In 2023, Abonos Superior - División Agrosuperior
S.A. made the strategic decision to consolidate and move the commercial
activities associated with the Carpi brand to Costa Rica, aiming to more
effectively serve its American and broader international markets from this
centralized hub, continuing the legacy of the Carpi name in agricultural
solutions. |
