The history of what is now Grupo
Chamartín, S.A. (CHAMSA) began in Zamora, Spain, in 1947, when D. Miguel
Colino Luis started manufacturing motor pump units. The family business
evolved, entering the sprinkler irrigation market in 1965 by becoming a distributor
for Humet Hidráulica S.A., Spain's first manufacturer of irrigation systems.
When his son, Miguel Angel Colino, joined in 1970, a real expansion began,
diversifying into numerous sectors and acquiring the irrigation systems
manufacturer Talleres Ibérica Metalodiesel, S.A. (Timsa) in 1973. A significant drop in sales in 1978 forced the
original group to restructure. In 1980, with the retirement of his
father, Miguel Ángel Colino became independent and, supported by two key
colleagues, founded the modern Grupo Chamartín, S.A. Facing a sector-wide
crisis, the new company realized its future depended on international
operations and product diversification. This led to a period of strategic
acquisitions between 1985 and 1995, where it took control of key players like
Ibérica de Riegos and Riegos Hölz. A pivotal move was the 1994 establishment
of Alueuropa, which was created to ensure the supply of aluminum pipes
after a key supplier closed and is now the most important company in the
Group. This strategy fueled significant international
growth. By 1986, exports accounted for over 50% of turnover, and the company
established subsidiaries in France, Brazil, and Portugal, and acquired a
stake in the English company Wright Rain. Between 1990 and 1998, its
Brazilian subsidiary installed over 50,000 hectares of sprinkler irrigation
equipment in partnership with state-owned companies and international banks.
Further expansion in the 2000s included major supply contracts to Iraq and
the acquisition of the French pivot manufacturer "2IE
International" (2004) and the irrigation division of the Uralita Group,
"Ura-Riego" (2005). These acquisitions allowed the Group to enter
the manufacturing of drip tapes and a second range of pivots, diversifying
its portfolio to the extent that by 2016, drip irrigation and pivots
collectively represented 55% of sales. Today, "Chamsa" produces all different
types of irrigation systems available on the market and is one of the most
promising industrial groups in Spain. The group operates 9 factories,
including pivot plants in France and Spain, two drip irrigation plants, a
sprinkler irrigation plant, an aluminum smelting plant, and two aluminum
extrusion plants with an annual capacity of 35,000 tons. The organization
employs 500 people, with a consolidated annual turnover of 150 million euros.
The 2006 entry of the third generation, Javier Colino, ensures a continued
focus on expansion and the renewal of its human resources, solidifying its
legacy as a global leader in irrigation solutions. |
