Built in the Dirt: The Kinze Story

    Great agricultural innovations rarely happen in a corporate laboratory; they happen in the dirt, born from the sheer frustration of a hard day's work. In 1965, a 21-year-old farm boy named Jon Kinzenbaw took a small bank loan, $25 in his pocket, and an undeniable mechanical gift, and opened a modest welding shop in Victor, Iowa. At the time, locals just knew young Jon was the guy who could fix anything. No one could have predicted that his small shop would eventually forge one of the largest privately held agricultural equipment manufacturers in North America.

    Jon didn't just want to repair broken equipment; he wanted to fundamentally improve how farmers worked the land. He started by manufacturing a 13-knife, 30-foot anhydrous ammonia application toolbar, quickly following it up with his first patented invention: a high-clearance, variable-width moldboard plow. But his first true industry-shaking innovation arrived in 1971. Recognizing the massive bottlenecks during harvest time, Jon designed and built the first-ever single-axle, low-profile grain cart, utilizing giant high-flotation tires. It completely revolutionized grain handling, allowing farmers to move faster and lighter across their fields.

    The event that permanently altered the trajectory of both Kinze and modern farming, however, came from a simple conversation in 1975. Jon listened as his friends complained about the grueling, wasted hours spent constantly dismantling and loading massive planters onto drop-bed trailers just to move them between fields. Jon went back to his shop and invented the rear-folding planter toolbar. Planting changed forever overnight. The first unit sold 20 more. Those 20 sold another 80.

    To keep up with the explosive, unstoppable demand, Jon purchased 10 acres of land and built a sprawling new manufacturing plant near Williamsburg, Iowa. By the end of the decade, he was dominating the fields with new 600- and 800-bushel grain carts, and the innovations simply never stopped. Today, Kinze remains fiercely independent and privately held by the Kinzenbaw family, operating out of a world headquarters with manufacturing facilities that span more than 30 acres under a single roof.

    Yet, the true secret to Kinze’s enduring dominance isn't just the scale of their factories; it is the dirt under their fingernails. The Kinzenbaw family and many of their employees still actively own and operate row crop farms. They operate on a simple, unbreakable philosophy: "We Use What We Build." Everything starts with listening to the farmers on the forefront of the industry, and then designing, building, testing, and refining those solutions on their own land before ever bringing them to the rest of the world.
